The Pickering GTA Music Festival

provides opportunities for amateur musicians to perform, receive adjudications, and compete.  As a member of  the Ontario Music Festivals Association, students may advance to the Provincial Music Festival.  This Festival is open to all students and observers.  A variety of music styles including classical, jazz, rock, folk, broadway, choral, band, and orchestral music is heard every year at the Festival including all instruments and singing. Our goal is to encourage musical development through performance, competition and adjudication.

Message From The Executive Director

Welcome to the Pickering GTA Music Festival. This is our 19th year, located in the West Hill area of Scarborough and Pickering. Please check the Competition Location section for maps of the churches we use. We offer classes for pop and jazz vocal, show choirs and electric guitar as well as all the traditional classical classes.  If you have an idea for a new class, please let me know. As a member Festival of the Ontario Music Festivals Association, we send as many candidates as possible on to the provincial competitions.. Last year, 36 candidates represented this festival at Provincials and I was very proud of all their performances. Candidates are chosen from grade 6 and up in all instruments, singing, music theatre, speech arts,  chamber, choral, band and orchestra classes.  Provincials have separate classes for upper and lower strings. Violins and violas in the upper and cello and bass in lower strings. This will allow more string players to attend Provincials and provide them with an adjudicator that is more specific to their needs. Please make sure you read all the Rules and Regulations regarding these classes at www.omfa.ca.

When the applications start arriving in my mailbox, I am excited to see returning performers, wondering what they are playing this year, and to see the new people entering. I look forward to hearing every performance as I am onsite for the entire Festival.  In submitting an application, competitors agree to perform at any time during the competition dates. Please plan to arrive a half hour before your performance time and stay to the end of the class to receive your adjudication and mark. Notification of your performance time is sent by email to you and your teacher. Please make certain that both emails are on your application form. If you change your email, please let us know. Classes will continue during inclement weather and may run later to accommodate this.

O.M.F.A. Provincials will be in Niagara Falls and will be held June 8-13th. I’d love to see many of you as participants in this event once again!

I have been organizing this Festival by myself for the last 19 years, but I can not do it alone!  Please consider volunteering your time to act as a Secretary to the Adjudicator during the Festival. I’m sure you would enjoy hearing all the performances. Donations are gratefully accepted for our scholarship fund.

Please contact me with any questions you may have. Best wishes in your musical training.

Executive Director
